Water Efficiency
Water Efficiency is about reducing water wastage, not restricting use.
The availability of water in the UK is lower than in most other European countries. With water availability in South East England less per person than Sudan and Syria.
A typical family uses approximately 7% of their water outdoors. Significant water savings can be made in your garden and in and around your home:-
- Fixing a dripping tap can save as much as 75 litres per day. A dripping tap wastes at least 5,500 litres of water per year, that's enough to fill a paddling pool every week for the whole summer.
- To save water outside use a watering can or a hose pipe with a trigger nozzle instead of a sprinkler. A hosepipe can use as much as 18 litres of water a minute.
- On average your roof collects about 85,000 litres of water each year which just runs straight down into the sewers. This water could fill 450 water butts with free water: you could water your garden, your houseplants or wash your car for free! Rainwater is also better for your plants than normal tap water.
- Lagging exposed pipes outside will prevent burst pipes in frosty and freezing weather conditions.
